DENVER - The Bills held Peyton Manning to 173 yards passing, forced him into two interceptions, even put a halt to his 51-game streak with a touchdown throw. Heck, Kyle Orton, the former Broncos quarterback who lost his job to Tim Tebow, more than doubled Manning in yards. If only Buffalo had kept those other numbers down — penalties, its own turnovers and missed opportunities — this wouldve been a day to remember. Instead, Orton and the Bills managed a field goal and a couple desperation touchdowns and fell 24-17 to the Broncos on Sunday. The defeat hurt them in the wild-card chase and hurt doubly because they slowed down Manning but squandered the opportunity. There were no surprises, Bills running back Fred Jackson said. We watched them on film all week. We knew what they were capable of doing. When you want to beat a good team, you cant have those penalties, those turnovers. Thats something were well aware of.The Bills (7-6), now in a five-way tie, one game behind the last wild-card teams, had three turnovers. But it was the penalties that hurt the most. They committed 11 for 98 yards. Two of them nullified interception returns of 60 and 48 yards that wouldve set them up nicely in Denver territory. The second, a 15-yarder on Corey Graham, wiped out most of Stephon Gilmores return, which would have given the Bills the ball on Denvers 35 midway through the third quarter with Buffalo trailing 21-3.Broncos centre Will Montgomery dived at Grahams knees while Graham was blocking during the return.Oh, it was a killer, Graham said. For me, it was a killer, too. The guy cut me when Im trying to block him. They dont call that, though. But they call me for retaliating. This marked the first time Manning has been held without a touchdown pass since Nov. 14, 2010, meaning Drew Brees will hang onto the record for at least a couple more years. It also marked the first time since last November in New England that Manning has been held under 200 yards passing. He finished 14 for 20 with a pedestrian passer rating of 56.9. And even though the Bills went without a sack for the first time this season, they kept the Broncos from making backbreaking plays. Mannings biggest completion was a 38-yarder to Wes Welker. All of which should have lessened the pressure on Orton, the journeyman who beat the Broncos 7-3 when he returned with Kansas City to close the 2011 season, only months after he was benched for Tebow, then traded away.Orton had 355 yards, most of them after the Bills had fallen behind by three touchdowns in the third quarter. Like Manning, he threw two interceptions. The first came after hed moved the Bills inside the Denver 20 midway through the third quarter, down by 18, when there was still enough time to mount a legitimate comeback. Not good enough to beat a good football team, Orton said when asked how he felt he played. From a pure yardage standpoint, the Bills defence got more than a passing grade, holding Denvers newest threat on offence, C.J. Anderson, to 58 yards on 21 carries and holding the entire Broncos offence to 306 yards, its lowest output of the season.Still, Anderson scored all three of Denvers touchdowns. And Buffalo couldnt stop his backup; Juwan Thompson carried it four times for 63 yards, including a 47-yard gain that set up Denvers third touchdown. Those things hurt. The penalties hurt worse.Jerry Hughes, a key to Buffalos recent success on defence, got hit with an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty in the second quarter and spent virtually the rest of the game on the sideline.Coach Doug Marrone, who blamed himself for setting a bad example with a couple emotional outbursts on the sideline, said Hughes initially was pulled to calm him down, but said he wasnt aware the fifth-year lineman had barely played after that.Asked about the penalty, Hughes said he didnt remember what happened. But he took responsibility for a play that defined the day for Buffalo. It was self-inflicted, he said. We have to play better, plain and simple.Notes: Buffalos only injury was to S DaNorris Searcy (hamstring). ... Jackson caught 10 passes for 37 yards and ran for 35. ... WINNIPEG -- Carter Hutton couldnt have asked for a better place to pick up his first NHL win. The 27-year-old Thunder Bay, Ont., native made 38 saves in front of a sold-out MTS Centre crowd that included his parents and several of his closest friends to backstop the Nashville Predators to a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets Sunday night. "They gave me the puck," said the undrafted journeyman who was making just his second NHL start after spending four seasons in the AHL. "But I think the biggest thing we got was the two points." Nashville coach Barry Trotz chose to rest starter Pekka Rinne after the teams Saturday night win in Montreal, giving Hutton the chance to play in the NHL building thats closest to his hometown. "Playing behind Pekka, hes a world-class goalie, so when I do get a chance to play I need to find ways to win hockey games. Thats what they brought me in for," Hutton said, adding that waiting as long as he did for his first NHL victory made it extra special. Patric Hornqvist scored the game-winner for the Predators (5-3-1), while Eric Nystrom and Matt Cullen added goals. Evander Kane had the lone Winnipeg goal. Trotz didnt think his team showed as much energy as it did the night before in Montreal, but gladly took a road win against a division opponent. "We got good goaltending. We feel we can play good team defence most nights and bend but not break," Trotz said. "Hopefully we can develop the offensive part of our game." The Predators recorded only seven shots in the second period, but made three of them count as they took control of the game. The win extended Nashvilles point streak to five games. The Jets (4-5-0) failed for the third time this season to beat a team that arrived in Winnipeg in the wee hours after playing the night before. Head coach Claude Noel didnt think his teams 39 shots provided nearly enough difficulty for Nashvilles inexperienced netminder. "I think thee shots would be an illusion.ddddddddddddWe needed to get secondary shots," Noel said. "I didnt think we created a whole lot." Nystrom opened the scoring 20 seconds into the second period with a shorthanded effort. The left-winger blocked a Dustin Byfuglien point shot, picked up the puck in the neutral zone and went the length of the ice before beating Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec with a wrist shot for his second goal of the season. "A shorthanded goal sucks the life out of your team a bit," said Kane, who thought the Jets were playing a solid game until that point. Hornqvists third of the year made it 2-0 when he intercepted a Pavelec clearing attempt in the corner, sent the puck toward the crease, and banked it into the empty net off the skate of Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian. Cullen added to the lead with a high shot from the left faceoff circle at 14:57. "Were playing pretty well right now," Cullen said. "Were getting some good goaltending and playing some good hockey. Were wearing teams down and have four lines that can skate." Pavelec stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced. The Jets ruined Huttons shutout bid at 9:13 of the third period when Kane jammed in a loose puck for his fifth goal of the season. Cullen had the best chance in a scoreless first period when he came out of the penalty box and scooped the puck up for a breakaway, only to be stopped by Pavelec. The shots were 15-12 Jets after one period. The Jets wrap up their season-long six-game homestand on Tuesday against Washington. The Predators visit Minnesota on Tuesday before heading home for a rematch against Winnipeg on Thursday. Notes: Rookie defenceman Seth Jones logged 26 minutes and 23 seconds of ice time for the Predators. a Forward Devin Setoguchi was back in the Winnipeg lineup after being a healthy scratch against St. Louis on Friday. a The game marked the first meeting between the franchises as Central Division rivals.
